Hello everyone,
As you know, from either using them already or hearing about them in the
past days, the Raspberry Pis are a handy prototyping tool, that is used
a lot at XPUB. We plan to have a few RPis available for workshops, or
for running particular projects, such as local XPUB server sandboxes
(more about it soon), XPPL, EtherBox, Bibliotecha, special issue
projects and other things; but we also strongly encourage that each one
of you purchase their own RPi, that you can use as your own prototyping
platform, take home, keep after you graduate, etc.
The total price is around €60,- which is relatively cheap if you
consider it is a full fledged computer, that can be repurposed for many
different things.
You can order RPis online, the prices are the same everywhere more or
less. We have a good experience with Kiwi-electronics, but you can order
them in many places (BTW the go-to-place for consumer electronics price
watch in the Netherlands is
https://tweakers.net/pricewatch/)
You need the RPi itself, a Power Supply, and an SD Card.
For instance:
Pi 3 B+ 39.95€

Power supply 9.95€
https://www.kiwi-electronics.nl/rpi-psu-5-1v-2-5a--eu-uk
Micro SD card+Adapter GB + SD Adapter 8.95€
https://www.kiwi-electronics.nl/Transcend-8GB-Class-10-MicroSDHC-UHS-1
Sometimes, all the needed parts come as part of a promotional bundle,
and some accessories can be also purchased but are not mandatory (like a
case).
If you have questions let us know! André will give a crash course on
Monday and you will start using a shared RPi on the studio network.
You don't need to have your own RPi for Monday.
//////
Note for second years: we need you to return the Pis we lend you last
year, unless they are being used to run collective projects, such as
XPPL. Can you please send us a list of the Pis that are being used in
collective projects? If your graduation project requires a Pi, you can
use your graduation project budget to purchase it, but it will have to
remain at XPUB after your graduation.
