XPUB1: tomorrow prototyping
by andre castro
hei gang!
Tomorrow I plan to introduce you to Python.
For those of you who have your own Pis: do you mind bringing them +
power supply?
I am planning to use them to get Python to control led-strips and do
some fun stuff with it.
There will be 4 Pi available anyway. But I am thinking that you might
want to play with it, on your own time, hence it is good to have your
own Pis.
See you tomorrow

Etherpad down again
by Simon Browne
Hi all,
The pad is down again - not sure if this is an intentional crash. Can anyone help to reboot this?
Best

Iris presentation at Life Hacks: Mind
by Simon Browne
Hi XPUB1,
Following on from yesterday’s meeting with Aymeric, I thought we should get started on the presentation for Life Hacks: Mind. I’ve made a pad with the previous presentation on it - we have enough material to edit this down into a 15 min presentation.
https://pad.xpub.nl/p/Life_Hacks_Mind_Iris_presentation
This is a basic plan for what I thought we could present:
Introduction (slide: Iris launch promo image)
1. Short description of Ten Theses on Life Hacks (slide: Varia event)
2. Iris background: connection to Ten Theses, initial ideas and narrative behind Iris (slide: ELIZA)
3. How Iris works: technical aspects (slide: photos of HNI staff interacting with Iris in office)
I’m happy to speak on part 2 (and part 1 if needed) - it’d be great if one or two more people could volunteer to join me as well. I don’t want to put any pressure on anyone (we all know how nerve-wracking it is speaking in public), so if you’re comfortable with it and keen please let me know which part of the presentation you’d like to deliver :)
Once we’ve decided that, then it’d probably be best for those people to work with me on editing down the previous presentation. What do you guys think?
Best,
Simon

Life Hacks: Mind on 24th of January
by Silvio Lorusso
Hello and happy new year everybody! Dear XPUB1, so the last Life Hacks event on the 24th of January is actually happening. Sorry for letting you know only now, but I had confirmation only a couple of days ago (of course everybody is invited). Info here (not yet on HNI website): https://www.facebook.com/events/2210212349252284/ No need to say I think Iris should be featured as well during the evening. I understand you already started the new trimester and your mind is elsewhere but this shouldn't take too much effort. I would suggest to showcase Iris in a similar way to the launch and shortly reflect maybe on the way it is received by the HNI staff. Maybe this could be the opportunity for producing a demo video. Let me know what you think. As soon as I know, I'll update the info on fb and HNI website. Thank you and looking forward! Best, s - ENTREPRECARIAT – Siamo tutti imprenditori. Fantastic! Thanks Katia. I’m glad some of your colleagues have already been exposed to Iris - the facial expressions in the first pic are priceless :)
See you on Monday at 10am at the front desk!

Iris at HNI
by Simon Browne
Hello Katia,
Hope you’ve had a restful break.
I’m one of the XPUB students who launched Iris at HNI in December last year - you may recall we had a couple of bugs to iron out, and we’d like to address these so that Iris can spend some time being used by HNI staff as soon as possible.
Silvio has also asked us if we’d like to include Iris (and a small presentation about it) in his Life Hacks: Mind event this coming Thursday the 24th, and it’d be great if we could have a fully functional device for this event.
I’m writing to ask if a couple of us to come by to collect Iris, and hopefully take some photos/video of HNI staff interacting with it, on Monday morning between 9 and 11am?
Please let me know if this is possible, at your earliest convenience.
Looking forward to finally having Iris included in the everyday worklife of the HNI office space!
Best regards,
Simon

Re: XPUB1 Special Issue #8 - next session
by Roel Roscam Abbing
Hey all,
So based on your input on who has access to their home router we have
established a route for tomorrow!
You can see it here:
https://framacarte.org/en/map/infrastructour_39710#13/51.9182/4.4788
We start of at the Burgermeester Hoffmanplein at 11:00.
Artemis - Burgemeester Hoffmanplein (Noordereiland)
Paloma - Boezemsingel (Crooswijk)
Roel - Zaagmolenstraat (Oude Noorden)
Simon - Lisbloemstraat (Noord)
*Long Bike Ride*
Tancre - van Cittersstraat (Nieuwe Westen)
Manetta - van der Poelstraat (Middeland)
Varia - Gouwstraat 3 (Oud-Charlois)
To document our infrastructour, we will divide the documentation tasks.
It would be great if you can already think of one of the tasks that you
would like to take on during the day. We thought about the following,
but we're curious to hear your suggestions!
- keeping track of configurations (maintaing screenshots router
interfaces, what is set on the router, what on the server?)
- mapping the networks around the server, a visualization task (who is
the internet provider, how is it connected to the wider internet?
who/what else is on that lan? what are the UP/DOWN speeds? what are the
server's local and external ip-addresses)
- mapping of dependencies, a visualization task (who is the internet
provider, who pays for the internet, who has access to the router, who
is sharing the network, whom did you have to ask permission?)
- collect stories/anecdotes about the server and the hosting situation
(how difficult was it to get access, what is the situation like? what is
the server called? what is the network called?)
- maintaining the jargon file up to date throughout the day
For the people ones who don't have (enough) access to their router,
there are basically two options:
- you share a machine with someone else (it will support multiple
users and online applications and in fact it is quite common to share
servers with multiple people)
- you have your own machine but share someone else's router
Anyway make sure you bring your servers (and laptop) with you!
@Rita / Pedro: what is the brand and model of your router? Perhaps it is
possible to find a password..
see you tomorrow!
