A cold wind is blowing through Charlois; We are pretty aware of this fact at Varia. Why? Because last Saturday night someone decided it was a good idea to throw a brick through our window... This sucks of course! However, our Christmas celebrations will continue as planned. You can help us by being there this Saturday and show your support! Come and dance to some holiday themed music, warm your heart up with a hot cup of glühwein and discuss your new years resolutions like there is no tomorrow! There will be performances by: [adammmmmmmmmmmm](https://adammmmmmmmmmmm.bandcamp.com/) - also known as Adam Tuch - an artist/musician from Boston who is part of the [media_rins](http://mediarins.xyz/) collective, [Logosamphia](https://logosamphia.bandcamp.com/); a project of Sadra Hemati with one foot in the French [underground party](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4Oc_RCTYmw) scene, and another in Netherlands’ avant-garde noise performance & arts world and DJ The Sound of C, who will bring you a dirt cheap Christmas extravaganza selected at your local thrift store. Records will be wrapped and given away after they hit the table. We will also have a donation box ready in case you want to help out Varia in this time of need. See you soon!
Through this email we would like to direct your attention to two things that happen at Varia this week.
On Friday, the 7th of December we have an event called Maximum Velocity; a music evening based on the concept of speed and movement within music. Pitch, timbre, texture, volume, duration and form; These are the secret ingredients to most compositions. The question remains however; Is there also room for something extra? And what could that extra element be? We will focus on the concept of velocity; showcasing concerts by musicians that utilise this principle in their work. The evening is comprised of performances by Bismuth, good cop/naughty cop, Jacco Weener and DJ Knapzak. We start at 20:00h and tickets are 5 euro's. For more info, go to: http://varia.zone/en/velocity.html
On Saturday, the 8th of December the second edition of Welcome to the Federation will be organised at Varia. This time focusing on Mastodon and The Fediverse. In recent years there has been a lot of dissatisfaction about social media. At the same time there has been a new platform, Mastodon, which has been gaining popularity in the way it seeks to address the sources of this unease. It looks and behaves like similar platforms, but under the hood it works substantially different ways. WttF will host an evening roundtable, starting at 20:00h as a general introduction into Mastodon and the Fediverse. How does it work? What are the underlying concepts? Who made it? What has been the history behind it? What kind of different communities inhabit this Fediverse? What does it mean to host such a community? As part of this edition of WttF we will also spend the afternoon together with a workgroup between 14:00h - 18:00h to look at the documentation and translation of the Mastodon project. How does the translation of open source projects work? How are projects communicated? How can the technical concepts be made accessible for larger audiences without diluting their significance? For more info, check: https://varia.zone/en/mastodon-and-fediverse.html
Of course, there are plenty of other things happening at Varia. But this is all you need to know for this week. Hope to see you at one of these events!
